Of the hundreds of components that go into planning a wedding, the selection of the ceremony music has to be my absolute favorite. I work with creative, diverse, non-traditional (and often geeky) couples, and their music selections are quite varied and extremely personal. The simple opening notes of the perfect processional song can create a huge theatrical element that will instantly generate deep emotions. When I’m reviewing music selections and my “chill-ometer” goes off, I know we’ve hit it on the head and this is going to be good! So imagine how thrilled I was when Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ), one of my absolute favorite providers of fun and funky wedding music, contacted me and asked me to take a listen to their upcoming release: Geek Wedding, The Sequel.
If you’re not already familiar with VSQ, they are a musical group from Los Angeles that are widely known for their series of string quartet tribute albums to rock and pop acts. They’ve produced over 50 albums covering everything from classic rock favorites to pop hits to The Nightmare Before Christmas. Geek Wedding, The Sequel is their follow up to last year’s nerdalicious compilation Geek Wedding. Not only is their music an obvious choice for themed weddings, but I personally think they’re an even better option for couples who want to include a nod towards their individual personalities without offending more traditional family members. Honestly, you can slip in a little “Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” and those who know…well, their heads would pop off! In the meantime, those who don’t quite get it would simply think it was a lovely, upbeat string piece. Your music becomes your own personal little Hidden Mickey!
My love for VSQ deepens even further with this new release and I could build an entire wedding around the selections on this collection alone.
Send your wedding party down the aisle to the hauntingly beautiful “Opening Suite” from Halo. One, or the other, or BOTH members of the couple enter(s) in true Timelord style to the suuuper cool theme from Doctor Who. There’s nothing quite like a John Williams “Raiders March” recessional! Then it’s off to enjoy a little Star Wars “Cantina Band” during cocktail hour. A little more time travel for your grand Entrance to “The Power of Love” from Back to the Future. Forgo the typical jazz and enjoy a selection of gamer favorites like Final Fantasy X and Portal 2 during dinner. And the pièce de résistance would be the First Dance to “As the World Falls Down” - the eerily romantic and incandescent David Bowie piece from the Labyrinth masquerade ball! (This one is now on my personal vow renewals list!)
